\What do you think is the most important thing about reading Shakespeare in easy English?
VFCNXsA₳pœǂޏŁA΂؂ȂƂ͉ł傤H
Well, I would like to say first that Shakespeare's plays are extremely difficult to understand, even for native English speakers. They were written 400 years ago and at that time the English language was so rich- very clever, complicated and free. And the meaning of many words at that time was different from their modern meaning. Shakespeare also invented more than one thousand words himself. If you study his plays, you will find they are full of wordplay: he sometimes gave one word as many as six different meanings.

\Wow! That must be difficult to understand.

Yes. So it's almost impossible to translate his words fully into another language. Of course, many translators do it very well, but you can't translate all the richness into other languages. However, what fascinates me is that, as difficult as Shakespeare's plays are, people all over the world still find them interesting. In Japan, for example, Shakespeare is very popular and many people want to see his plays acted in Japanese. Of course, they are very different from the original plays, but they still have meaning. Why is that? I think it's because Shakespeare tells us all about ourselves as humans and our lives. His plays have a universal message. And they are very good stories. So to write these prose versions of his plays was very interesting and exciting.

There is another thing. English actors never perform Shakespeare in modern English; they have no chance to change the words, unless they forget them on stage! So for me it was very nice to be able to rewrite Shakespeare's words! Normally you can't do that.
